Job Training

Working with labor unions, community organizations, area businesses, and City council members, the JTBO partnership has created a wide variety of industry specific job training programs that lead to meaningful employment opportunities. All job preparation programs offered by the partnership are free and have employment placement assistance upon completion.

The funding for the Jobs to Build On and Worker Service Center programs has been provided by the New York City Council. Please click on the links below to learn more.

Training Programs


Commercial Drivers License (Access-a-Ride) Bronx
South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corp. (SoBRO) is offering training for NYS Class �CDL CP� certification for drivers of small trucks or vans for Access-A-Ride. This intensive four week classroom and road course also prepares graduates for entry level positions. Training also includes interview skills and job placement assistance. 

Requirements:

  • NYS license for at least three (3) years
  • No more than 4 points, within the last three (3) years
  • No suspension or revocation for the last three (3) years.
  • Must pass criminal background check and drug test

Commercial Drivers License (Brooklyn)

Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI) Red Hook On-the-Road is offering training for NYS Class "B/BP/BPS" licenses for drivers of trucks, school buses, coach or charter buses, airport shuttles, Access-a-Ride. This intensive four week classroom and road course also prepares graduates for the job market with customer service, interview skills and job placement assistance. 

Requirements

  • 21 years or older
  • NYC Resident
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • A clean NYS driver's license for at least two (2) years
  • No more than two (2) points, or one suspension or one conviction showing on the driver record (No Combination)

Drivers License (Brooklyn)

Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI) is offering training for NYS Drivers Licenses (New York Drives). This intensive four-five (4-5) week classroom and road course, consists of a mix of group workshops covering vocational training and individual behind-the-wheel instruction. After successfully passing the road test graduates will be prepared for the job market with customer service, interview skills and job placement assistance. 

Requirements

  • 18 years or older
  • NYC Resident
  • Legally eligible to work in the US
  • Learner's Permit
  • Unemployed, low-income and/or receiving Public Assistance

Home Health Aide Training (Bronx)

This entry level clinical course if offered in English and Spanish. Home health aides provide basic medical and home care for patients in their residences. This in-depth four (4) week training runs twice the federal required standard and will provide participants with the skills needed to enter this challenging industry. Training is offered by Cooperative Home Care Associates, located at 349 East 149th Street in the Bronx.

Requirements:

  • 7th grade reading and math comprehension
  • Able to bend, lift and physically assist clients
  • Ability to pass a drug test and nation-wide criminal background check

Computer Repair Course

Per Scholas, Inc. offers training for computer technician and computer support specialist. Participants will receive in-depth instruction in hardware and software operating systems, including computer assembly, diagnostics and repair. Students are prepared for the Microsoft A+ certification test, the industry standard. 

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic computer knowledge and be able to use a mouse
  • Have or be willing to get a NYS drivers license

Cable Installation

Brooklyn Networks at NYC College of Technology provides an intensive five (5) week program for low-voltage cable installation. Participants are taught using the nationally recognized BICSI Telecommunications Information Systems Level 1 curriculum. This is hands-on technical training and students must also pass rigorous written examinations. Graduates work installing cable TV, computer networks, home theatres and security systems. Intensive job readiness skills training are included, including customer service, resume preparation and mock interview skills.

  • A clean, valid NYS driver’s license
  • Pass a reading and math test at the 8th grade level
  • Pass a drug test
  • Able to lift 70 lbs. and bend

Film and TV Production Assistant

Brooklyn Workforce Innovations is offering the "Made in New York" Production Assistant four (4) week training course which prepares applicants for a career in TV and film production. Work includes setting up shoots, lights, props and set management. The training leads to a certification from the NYC Mayor�s office of film, Theatre and Broadcasting. Placement assistance for graduates includes resume and interview skills, computer training and mock interviews.

Wood Working & Cabinet Making

Brooklyn Workforce Innovations is offering the �Brooklyn Woods� eight (8) week training course which prepares students for jobs as skilled wood workers and cabinet makers. Throughout the training students learn safe use and proper care of hand and power tools, shop production, wood technology, finishing techniques, cabinet installation and mechanical drawing. Placement assistance for graduates includes resume and interview skills, computer training and mock interviews.

Administrative / Office Assistant (Brooklyn)

Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT) offers an eight (8) week course covering all aspects of office assistant employment including training in business correspondence, office computer software, communications and organization. Job placement assistance is available upon graduation.

Childcare Business Development Program (locations in various boroughs)

This program (CCBDP) helps home-based child care providers start and expand their own business as a means to self-employment. CCBDP offers intensive training and a variety of key support services in business, finance and legal areas. Training in micro-business management; finance; marketing; and education and development are offered to round out the deep curriculum. The evening course runs to 45 hours over nine (9) weeks.

Security Guard Training � 8 Hour, 16 Hour & Fire Guard (Manhattan)

HANAC, Inc. offers a Security Guard class designed to train participants to obtain the New York State Pre-Assignment Training Certificate that will allow Graduates to work as Security Guards. The class includes the 8-Hr. Pre-Assignment Training, the 16-Hr. On-The-Job Training Course and the Fire Guard Training. Participants will cover the following topics: Rules, Regulations and Procedures; The Role of a Security Guard; Legal Powers and Limitations; Emergency Situations; Communication, Public Relations; Conflict Management; Access Control; Ethics Conduct; and Report Writing. At the end of each class there is an exam and students are required to get at least 70% correct in order to pass. The results of the exam and personal information are submitted to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services and participants receive a certificate. Job placement assistance is available upon completion.

Building Maintenance/Weatherization Training

Northern Manhattan Improvement Corp. (NMIC) is offering a three (3) month course that includes a green component to teach trainees to be more environmentally friendly, conscious, and involve training in Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, and alternative fuel. At completion, trainees will earn a Certificate of Completion for the Building Maintenance training and be placed in employment including apprenticeships.

  • Must have a clean record
  • No substance abuse or orthopedic issues
  • Must speak, read and write in English
  • Ability to perform physical labor

Blue Collar Prep/NEW at Night & ReNEW Green Training - Women ONLY

Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) offers programs that include a mix of hands-on shop skills, classroom instruction, and physical fitness assessment. NEW currently offers three main programs: Blue Collar Prep, NEW at Night and ReNEW. Graduates from their pre-apprenticeship training programs enter apprenticeship programs and begin working in the construction, transportation and energy industries and facilities maintenance. NEW graduates successfully compete for skilled blue-collar careers that enable women to achieve economic self sufficiency.
 
Requirements:

  • Be a woman
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Willing and able to perform at least 8 hours of physical work
  • Have a genuine commitment to pursuing a career in the building and construction trades or other blue collar career

Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training (BEST)

Sustainable South Bronx offers a 12 week training course in: Restoration of rivers, parks and open space; Tree pruning and climbing; Planting and weed techniques; Landscaping techniques; Green Roof training and Solar Power; 40 hour HAZMAT; 10 hour OSHA; and First Aid and CPR. Job placement assistance is available upon completion.
 
Requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Interested in Ecological and/or Brownfield Training Restoration
  • Able to work outdoors in all kind of weather
  • Valid driver's license or ability to get Learner's Permit
  • Available to participate in classroom and field training five (5) days a week for 12 weeks

Pre-Apprenticeships

The Edward J. Malloy Initiative for Construction Skills (C-SKILLS) offers a pre-apprenticeship program that runs for 14 weeks. Trainees attend classroom training once a week for three (3) hours per week for ten (10) weeks in the spring. Trainees are given an overview of the unionized construction industry; basic safety and health training; intensive math and exam preparation; interview preparation; and symposiums conducted by Directors of union apprenticeship programs. Upon successful completion of the spring component, trainees continue on to the four (4) week summer component where they receive basic hands-on training that is used to impart upon the trainees the skills needed to be successful in the unionized construction industry.
